Black Friday: The Day the Entire World Goes Shopping

11/27/2025

Although it originated in the United States, the famous “Black Friday” has grown into a global phenomenon, known as the day when the entire world heads out to shop. We instantly picture long lines in front of stores, packed malls, and legendary discounts that make people around the globe eager to grab the best deals of the year. But behind this popular “shopping holiday” lies a surprisingly interesting story.

Where and How It All Began

Have you ever wondered how this worldwide shopping tradition came to be in he first place? It all started back in the 1950s, when police officers in Philadelphia began using the term “Black Friday” to describe the chaos and gridlock that would take over the city the day after Thanksgiving.

The crowds were caused by massive waves of shoppers and tourists ahead of the holiday weekend and a traditional local football game, forcing police to work overtime just to keep the situation under control. In the 1980s, retailers began re-framing the day with a more positive meaning, using “Black Friday” to promote huge discounts and clear out inventory before the upcoming holiday season.

The Evolution of Black Friday

Since then, Black Friday has become a symbol of massive discounts and a “holiday of savings,” when people around the world enjoy hunting for the best deals. By the late 1990s, it was already a staple in American shopping culture, and soon after, it spread across Europe and then the rest of the world, evolving into one of the most anticipated days of the year.

In our region, it caught on only in the past decade, but today it’s a date everyone looks forward to. Ironically, Black Friday has become so widespread and popular that it no longer lasts just that one last Friday in November, but often stretches across several days or even longer.

Fun Facts About Black Friday

Black Friday is best known for huge discounts and busy stores, but there are a few surprising facts behind the phenomenon:

● In the 1960s, retailers tried (and failed) to rebrand the day as “Big Friday.”

● Over 39% of Black Friday purchases are made via smartphones.

● The average savings on Black Friday amount to about 37%.
